Grant to partially compensate for the increase in accommodation VAT rate related with contracts of accommodation services during 2011 in Malta and signed before 25 October 2011
In the 2011 Budget Speech (25 October 2010), the Minister of Finance, the Economy and Investment announced that “the Government will increase the rate of VAT on the collective and private accommodation from 5 to 7 per cent”. However, before this announcement was made, a number of establishments offering accommodation in Malta entered into a contract, with tour operators, on which the net price was based on the pre-budget 5% VAT rate.

For this reason, the Minister, in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority, agreed to introduce a scheme to partially compensate for the difference in VAT rate, by offering a grant for accommodation, covered by these pre-budget contracts, which as from 1 January 2011 have had to be invoiced at the rate of 7% VAT. Such grant will be equivalent to one percentage point of the 7 per cent VAT charged. This scheme was published as a Government Notice No.888 of the Government Gazette dated 27th September 2011.
