​Funeral and Ordination to the Priesthood Grants

Applications for grants under the schemes Funeral and Ordination to the Priesthood Grant announced as per Government Notice No. 38 of the 13th January, 2017, shall, with effect from the 1st November, 2017, be made only via the official electronic portal/s as per Government Notice No. 1205 of the 31st October, 2017.

In view of the COVID-19 outbreak, in cases where the funeral mass and the burial are not held on the same date (i.e. the funeral mass is held on a date following the date of the burial), applications under this scheme, including the details of documents required, should be submitted by not later than six months (180 days) from the date of the funeral mass.

​Wedding Civil Union Grant

In order to assist couples who, get married or enter into a civil union the Ministry for Finance and Employment has issued a scheme, whereby eligible applicants may apply for a grant on the expenditure incurred on the supply of goods and services relating to their wedding/civil union ceremony as listed in the ‘First Schedule’ attached to the Government notice, which function is performed  in Malta.

Refund Grant on the Deposit Paid for Postponement or Adaptation of Weddings/Civil Union Ceremonies

In order to alleviate the unprecedented difficulties which some couples were faced with,  due to the COVID-19 outbreak the Minister for Finance and Employment has made the following scheme, whereby eligible couples who had to postpone or adapt their wedding due to the restriction caused by COVID-19 will get reimbursed for their forfeited deposits.

In order to further promote local talent in the musical field, the Minister for Finance has issued a scheme, whereby eligible applicants may apply for a once only grant of 15.25% on the purchase price of a musical instrument as listed in the Government Notice, subject to a maximum grant of €465.87.

​Assistance to Church and Independent Schools related to Capital Expenditure in the Implementation of Educational reforms for All Children to Succeed

As a result of the consultation process undertaken by Government regarding the implementation of the education reforms and with a view to assist Church and Independent Schools to introduce these reforms, thus ensuring that all students can benefit from the changes taking place, the Minister for Finance, together with the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation have launched a scheme that aims to assist Church and Independent Schools with regards to capital expenditure related to such reforms in the interests of national educational development, so that learners in these schools may also benefit from the highest quality of educational environment.

A Once-Only Grant on the Purchase of a Bicycle and a Pedelec Bicycle

In order to encourage the use of bicycles and pedelec bicycles as means of transport that reduce both pollution and traffic and at the same time encourage physical activity, the Minister for Finance has made this scheme whereby a once-only grant of 15.25% on the purchase price of the bicycle, subject to a maximum grant of €85 in the case of a non-mechanised bicycle and a maximum grant of €250 in the case of a pedelec bicycle, is granted to eligible applicants.

Government Grant on the Purchase of Bicycles and Pedelec Bicycles by Companies that Offer Such Bicycles for Hire

In order to encourage the use of clean means of transport while, at the same time, encouraging physical exercise, the Minister for Finance has launched a scheme, whereby companies who have purchased a bicycle or pedelec bicycles and that offers such bicycles for hire may apply for a grant of 15.25% on the purchase price of bicycles subject to a maximum grant of €85 per non-mechanised bicycle and a maximum grant of €250 for a pedelec bicycle. This up to a capping of €7,500 per applicant.

Grant scheme on the Purchase of Special Equipment for use by Persons with Disability

In order for the Government to assist persons with disability that need to purchase special equipment required to live an independent life, the Ministry for Finance issued a scheme, whereby eligible applicants may apply for a grant for expenditure that is incurred on the purchase price of the special equipment, as per applicable rates enclosed in the Government Notice reproduced hereunder.

The Ministry for Finance notifies that equipment ‘Customisation of vehicles, including hand controls and moveable seats’ shall, no longer be an eligible expenditure through the grant.

Applications for this equipment can however be made through the ‘Scheme for Exemptions/Reductions/Grants Related to Motor Vehicles for Persons with Disability’.

Government Grant on the Installation of Bicycle Racks/Ancillary Facilities

In order to incentivise the use of alternative green means of transport while, at the same time, encouraging physical exercise and a healthier lifestyle the Minister for Finance has set up a fund to cover the expenditure incurred by local councils and enterprises to install bicycle racks and ancillary facilities.

Local councils and enterprises can apply for funds by submitting the application form after having consulted the applicable guidelines and submitted the relevant application form to the Board for the Bicycle Rack Fund.

Grant on the Purchase and Installation of Water Purifying Equipment

In order to reduce the use of plastic containers utilised for bottling water, the Minister for Finance has launched this grant on the purchase and installation of equipment to purify water at home by reverse osmosis, reverse osmosis system with reject water return and water filtration system. This scheme applies to expenditure incurred once only on the purchase price and installation of purifying water equipment for domestic use by the applicant. The grant is only eligible for private individuals (natural persons) that purchase water purifying equipment for use on their residential property. Eligible applicants may apply only once for one of the below grants:
  1. Grant A: Water filtration system
‘Water filtration system’ means an ultrafiltration or microfiltration system, where the filtration equipment itself results in zero water wastage during the filtration process. This excludes jug filters. The grant will cover 40% on the purchase price and installation of Water Filtration System equipment subject to a maximum grant of €100.
  1. Grant B: Reverse Osmosis System
‘Reverse Osmosis System’ means a reverse osmosis system where the reject water generated by the system during the filtration process is not diverted back to the residential water storage for re-use. The grant will cover 15.25% on the purchase price and installation of Reverse Osmosis equipment subject to a maximum grant of €100.
  1. Grant C: Reverse Osmosis System with reject water return
‘Reverse Osmosis System with reject water return’ means a reverse osmosis system where the reject water generated by the system during the filtration process is diverted back to the residential water storage for re-use. The grant will cover 40% on the purchase price and installation of Reverse Osmosis with reject water return subject to a maximum grant of €300.

The Water Purifying Equipment grant is currently being administered by the Regulator for Energy and Water services (www.rews.org.mt).

Grant on the Restoration and Finishing of Privately Owned Residential Properties

The Ministry for Finance has launched the following grant scheme, that will reimburse eligible expenditure that is incurred by the applicant related to the restoration and finishing of privately owned residential properties within Urban Conservation Areas (UCAs), properties that have been built for more than 20 years and have been vacant for more than seven years, and new properties that are developed in conformity with approved criteria as defined by the established guidelines and approved by the Board appointed by the Minister responsible for finance.

Between the 12th of October 2021 and the 31st of December 2024, eligible applicants may apply twice on each property for a grant of 18% on the costs of restoration and finishing up to an aggregate maximum of €54,000 for each property.

Grant for first time buyers

The Ministry  for Finance has launched the following grant scheme, that aims to incentivise and assist first time buyers that purchase residential properties within Urban Conservation Areas (UCAs), properties that have been built for more than 20 years and have been vacant for more than seven years, and new properties that are developed in conformity with approved criteria as defined by the established guidelines and approved by the Board appointed by the Minister responsible for finance.

Eligible applicants will receive a maximum grant of:

  • €15,000 if the property purchased is in Malta;
  • €30,000 if the property purchased is in Gozo and the deed of acquisition was signed until 31st December 2023; and
  • €40,000 if the property purchased is in Gozo and the deed of acquisition is signed between 1st January 2024 and 31st December 2024.

The actual amount allocated will be established on a pro rata basis according to the share of the property being acquired.
